UPSC conducts the most prestigious and competitive examinations in the country, in which lakhs of candidates appear every year. Keeping this objective in mind, UPSC has now decided to implement face recognition system at all its examination centres. This means that now facial recognition of the candidates will be done at the examination center to get admission in the examination. This step is a major change towards increasing transparency and security in the examination process of the Commission.
Why is UPSC implementing face authentication?
UPSC conducts many important recruitment examinations every year, and lakhs of candidates from across the country appear in these examinations. Till now, identification of candidates was mainly done through documents and ID cards. But officials say that facial recognition system will make this process more robust and secure. Its main objective is to identify the right candidate i.e. to ensure that only the person who has applied appears in the examination. To prevent fraud, to prevent any candidate from appearing in the examination in place of someone else. Maintaining candidates’ confidence in the recruitment process. Reduce manual checks. Now the identification process will be more automatic and will not take time in long lines or manual checking.
How does face recognition work?
Face recognition technology is completely AI-based. Its method is very easy. When the candidate had applied for UPSC, he had uploaded his photo. On the day of examination, the candidate will stand in front of the camera installed at the entry gate. The system will match the live photo of that person with the photo of the application. If the photo matches, the candidate will be allowed to enter the examination hall. The entire process is completed in just 8-10 seconds and does not require manual access, officials say that the system will work smoothly under normal exam-day conditions and candidates will not have to wait for long.
Pilot testing and experience
Before fully implementing this system, UPSC had done a pilot project in NDA and CDS examinations. It was tested at selected centers in Gurugram on September 14, 2025. In the pilot test, the live photos of the candidates were digitally matched with the photo of the application. The verification process took only 8-10 seconds. This experiment showed that both security and the entry process were improved. The result was that the Commission decided to implement it in all UPSC recruitment examinations.
What should the candidates prepare on the day of examination?
Now face recognition has become mandatory, so candidates have to keep some things in mind. Like the photo uploaded at the time of registration and the actual face should match to a great extent, carry important things like ID, admit card like before, stand in front of the camera at the entry point and complete the verification process. The examination center will have to ensure that the cameras and internet connectivity are in good condition so that there is no delay.
