It is not easy to pass the Civil Services Examination of Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). Lakhs of students appear for this difficult examination every year, but only a few of them are able to make their dreams come true. Pawan Kumar, resident of Raghunathpur village in Bulandshahr district, not only faced difficult circumstances but also realized his dream of becoming an IAS on the basis of his courage and dedication. His story is an example of poverty, struggle and hope.
Pawan’s family was very simple. His father Mukesh Kumar used to work as a laborer in MNREGA. The condition of the house was so bad that the walls were broken and instead of the roof one had to resort to tarpaulin and polythene. The family used to cover themselves with this tarpaulin even in rain or sun. Amidst so much poverty, Pawan had a deep passion for studies and a desire to do something.
Pawan’s family put in all their courage and hard work to give wings to his dreams. Father bought a second hand mobile for Rs 3200 so that Pawan could study. The mother sold some of her jewelery and the sisters also added their small savings to help Pawan meet the coaching expenses. It was the selfless devotion and faith of the family that carried Pawan forward.
Despite difficulties, did not lose courage
Pawan Kumar started his preparation for civil services in a coaching center in Delhi. In the beginning he faced continuous failure. There was no success in the first two attempts. But Pawan did not give up. He had no option to turn back. He studied day and night, spent most of the time in self-study and focused on his goal. His hard work paid off. Pawan secured 239th rank in the UPSC 2023 result and succeeded in becoming an IAS. Despite poverty and limited resources, he created history.
