It is said that if a person is determined and does not stop working hard, no matter what the circumstances are, he definitely achieves his goal. One such true and inspiring story is that of Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Umesh Ganpat Khandbahale. His life’s journey is a big lesson for those youth who start considering themselves weak after one failure.
Umesh Ganpat belongs to a small village in Khandabahale Maharashtra. His family was simple and resources were also limited. During his studies, he suffered a major setback when he failed in the 12th class English exam. He got only 21 marks in this examination. This failure was so big that he failed the entire 12th class. After this, circumstances became such that he had to leave his regular studies.

After leaving his studies, Umesh did not leave himself to the mercy of circumstances. To take up the responsibility of the family, he started working with his father. He used to go to Nashik from his village every day to sell milk. Apart from this, he also did many small jobs so that the household expenses could be met. Hard work and struggle throughout the day became a part of his daily routine.
However, despite the difficult circumstances, the desire to study and move ahead never ended in Umesh’s mind. He had accepted that the path was certainly difficult, but not impossible. After some time, he decided to start studies again through open school. With hard work and patience he passed 12th class again. This proved to be the first major turning point in his life.

After passing 12th, Umesh took admission in college with science subject. Along with studies, he also had to work to support his expenses and family, but he never gave up. Gradually he completed his graduation degree. During this time, the dream of serving the country became stronger in his mind.
After this he started preparing for UPSC Civil Services Examination. This journey was not easy, especially for a person who had ever suffered the pain of leaving studies. But Umesh did not make his past failures his weakness, but his strength. He studied with limited resources, used his time properly and continued working hard.

The results of the hard work were finally visible. Umesh Ganpat Khandbahale passed the UPSC exam and got 704th rank. With this rank he was selected for the Indian Police Service (IPS).
