Toxic Metals Breast Milk: The recent report regarding increased amount of lead in the blood of children and pregnant women in Bihar is very worrying. Lead is a neurotoxin for which no level is considered safe. Even a small increase in it in children can cause permanent damage to the brain. Due to this, there is a risk of low IQ, difficulty in learning, lack of attention and persistent behavioral problems.
This study published in Scientific Reports is the first major assessment of the presence of uranium in mother’s milk in the Ganga plains, especially in Bihar. This is the same area where dangerous levels of heavy metals like arsenic, lead and mercury have been found in the past. Lead levels above 10 µg/dL multiply the risk of long-term mental and cognitive damage in children. In pregnant women, this poison easily crosses the placenta, which can cause miscarriage, premature delivery, low birth weight and severe disruption in the brain development of the fetus. The concern also increases because the same routes through which these toxins enter the body later reach the mother’s milk.
How harmful is it?
Dr. Jai Patel, Consultant Physician and Nephrologist of KD Hospital (Ahmedabad) says that the increase in lead in the body of children is very dangerous. It stunts brain development, leading to falling IQ, poor attention and learning abilities, and also affects behavior. Apart from this, it also affects immunity and growth. During pregnancy, this poison easily crosses the placenta, which increases the risk of miscarriage, premature delivery, low birth weight babies and life-long developmental problems. Even at low levels, the effects of lead are permanent and irreversible.
How does poison reach mother’s milk?
If we talk about where it reaches, then lead and other neurotoxins enter the body through many routes, which include water, soil, food, utensils, spices or air. Whatever things affect the mother on a daily basis, gradually get accumulated in the body and enter the blood and reach the milk during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Toxins mostly accumulate in the bones and are released into the blood during pregnancy, so the newborn is at greatest risk because this is the most sensitive period of brain and body development.
