America is once again embroiled in war. Apart from the loss of life and property, the country is also having to pay huge economic costs. According to reports, America has spent $779 million i.e. approximately Rs 6,900 crore in the first 24 hours of the attacks on Iran. US President Donald Trump has announced that this war will last for about a month, or perhaps even longer.
According to data from the Center for New American Security, the operation of a carrier strike group (like the USS Gerald R. Ford, which is the world’s largest aircraft carrier) alone costs about $65 lakh or Rs 58 crore per day. America has deployed two carrier strike groups, including Gerald R Ford, in the Middle East regarding attacks on Iran.
‘America will spend Rs 18.87 lakh crore’
The estimated cost of pre-attack military preparations, including deployment of aircraft, deployment of naval ships and mobilization of regional resources, was approximately $630 million (Rs 5,556 crore). If the war drags on as Trump has indicated, then according to Kent Smetters, director of Penn Wharton Budget Model, America will have to spend $ 210 billion (Rs 18.87 lakh crore).
Since Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, 2023, killing nearly 1,200 people and taking 251 hostage, the US has provided $21.7 billion in military aid to Israel. This also includes the costs of Israel’s operations in Yemen, Iran and the Middle East, which cost between $9.65 billion and $12.07 billion.
How long will the war last?
According to Brown University’s 2025 ‘Cost of War’ report, adding these two figures, the expenditure increases from $31.35 billion (Rs 2.82 lakh crore) to $33.77 billion (Rs 3.04 lakh crore). When Trump was asked how long the war would last, he said, ‘We had estimated four to five weeks, but we have the ability to continue the war for much longer than that. We will do it. No matter how much time it takes. It’s okay, whatever has to be done.
