After the US military action in Venezuela and the arrest of President Nicolas Maduro, political unrest has increased within America. Taking an important step, the US Senate has put forward a proposal to limit the war powers of President Donald Trump.
In the voting held in the US Senate on Thursday (January 8, 2026), 52 MPs voted in favor of moving the proposal forward and 47 voted against it. The purpose of this proposal is that President Trump will have to obtain the permission of Congress before taking any further military action against Venezuela. The special thing in this voting was that five MPs from Trump’s Republican Party supported the Democrats. One Republican lawmaker abstained from voting.
Such a proposal was stopped earlier also
Last year, due to pressure from the Trump administration, two similar proposals were stopped in the Senate. Last time in November, this proposal was defeated by just two votes. At the time, the administration claimed that there were no plans for regime change or a major military attack in Venezuela, but after Maduro’s arrest, many lawmakers felt that Congress had not been fully briefed.
Republican MPs are also expressing their displeasure
Republican Senator Rand Paul, co-proponent of this resolution, said that now many people within his party are feeling uneasy about the military powers of the President. Along with him, Democrat Senator Tim Kaine is also leading this proposal. Both are members of the Foreign Relations Committee.
Which Republican MPs supported
Republican lawmakers who voted in favor of advancing the proposal included Rand Paul (Kentucky), Susan Collins (Maine), Josh Hawley (Missouri), Lisa Murkowski (Alaska) and Todd Young (Indiana). At present the Republican Party has 53 seats and the Democrats have 47 seats in the Senate.
President Donald Trump’s attack
US President Donald Trump has strongly attacked five Republican senators of his own party through a sharp post on Truth Social. Trump alleged that these senators, along with the Democrats, have tried to weaken the President’s military powers, which could put America’s national security in danger.
This statement of Trump has come at a time when the War Powers Resolution, which limits the President’s powers on military action related to Venezuela, has moved forward in the US Senate. Donald Trump wrote in his post that the Republican Party should be ashamed of those senators who voted with the Democrats.
