More than one lakh visas, including 8,000 student visas, were canceled in 2025 as part of a sweeping crackdown against immigrants in the US citing criminal activity. The US State Department said in a post on social media on Monday, ‘We will continue to extradite these thugs to make America safer.’ The post said, ‘Taking action against those who flout the law for criminal activities in the US, the State Department has canceled 1,00,000 visas, including 8,000 student visas and 2,500 special visas.’

State Department deputy spokesperson Tommy Pigott said that in less than a year, the Trump administration has canceled more than one lakh visas. He said, ‘These include visas for thousands of foreign nationals accused or convicted of crimes like assault, theft and drunk driving.’ According to the news of Fox News, 40 thousand visas were canceled in the last year of former President Joe Biden’s tenure i.e. 2024, in comparison to which more than double the visas were canceled in 2025. It has been said in the news that most of the people whose visas were canceled in 2025 were businessmen and tourists who had stayed in the country longer than the visa period.

Cancellation of student visa is a concern in the education world.

The cancellation of 8,000 student visas is considered to be the most sensitive aspect of this entire action. America is the largest center of higher education for students from all over the world, where millions of students from India, China, Latin America and Africa come to study. The news of student visa cancellations has worried both international students and universities. However, the administration says that the visas of only those students who were found involved in criminal activities have been cancelled.
