Mohibul Hasan Choudhary, a close aide of former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and former minister, has made a big claim. In an interview given to Russia Today, Chaudhary alleged that American humanitarian agency USAID and the Clinton family were behind Sheikh Hasina’s departure from power in 2024. He also said that the current interim government head and Nobel laureate Mohammad Yunus and America have had long-standing relations. However, America has already dismissed these allegations as ‘ridiculous’.
USAID and NGOs accused of conspiracy to topple the government
Chaudhary claimed that American agencies and some NGOs launched a campaign against the Hasina government since 2018. He said, ‘Some American NGOs, especially USAID and the International Republican Institute, were targeting our government for a long time.’ He alleged that millions of dollars of USAID funding went missing and this money was used for ‘regime change activities’. According to him, ‘The anarchy that spread in Bangladesh due to this funding was planned and gradually turned into a major riot.’
Hasina’s old allegation – ‘Yunus sold the country to America’
Former PM Hasina had also earlier accused Mohammad Yunus of working in the interest of America. He had said that his father Sheikh Mujibur Rahman had refused to give St. Martin Island to America, that is why pressure is being created. America completely rejected these allegations and said that they have nothing to do with the Bangladesh crisis.
Sheikh Hasina fled the country on 5 August 2024
Chaudhary said that the way Hasina government fell in 2024, it was not sudden but was part of a ‘carefully planned’ plan. On August 5, 2024, Sheikh Hasina left the country minutes before a mob attacked her residence in Dhaka. She is now living in Delhi. This unrest was sparked by student protests over reservation in government jobs, which turned into major riots in July-August. During this period, there were reports of deaths of at least 700 people, which also included reports of attacks on Hindu minorities.
Claim of ‘old relationship’ between Clinton family and Yunus
Chaudhary claimed that there has been a long-standing relationship between the Clinton family and Yunus’ interim government. According to him, ‘This network was active for years. Funding was done through secret NGOs and they were intent on changing the government by any means. Chaudhary said that after the change of power, the policies of Yunus government seem to be moving closer to Pakistan. This is the same Pakistan which was accused of genocide in Bangladesh in 1971.
