Vande Bharat Cost: In India, Vande Bharat Express has given a fast pace to the Indian Railways. But the price of this speed is very high. It costs Rs 115 to 120 crore to make a standard 16 coach Vande Bharat Express. This is one of the most expensive passenger trains ever built in India. How much more expensive is this than Rajdhani and Shatabdi
When compared with traditional premium trains like Rajdhani Express and Shatabdi Express, the difference is quite visible. LHB coaches are used in Rajdhani and Shatabdi trains, each of which costs around Rs 1.5 to Rs 2 crore. The cost of a complete rake of 16 LHB coaches is approximately Rs 60 to 70 crore.
Even after adding the high power electric locomotive worth Rs 15 to 20 crore, the total cost of a Rajdhani or Shatabdi train usually remains within Rs 80 to 90 crore. In comparison, Vande Bharat train is overall more expensive by about 30 to 40%.
The biggest reason for increasing costs
The biggest reason for the high cost of Vande Bharat is its distributed power or self-propulsion technology. Unlike Rajdhani and Shatabdi trains which depend on a single locomotive, Vande Bharat has electric traction motors fitted under every second or third coach.
Advanced technology and passenger convenience
Vande Bharat Bharat features fully automatic sliding doors, sealed gangways, aircraft style seating, sensor based bio toilets and onboard diagnostics. Regenerative braking is sometimes used in this, which generates electricity during braking and sends it back to the system.
Along with this, safety is also another big contributor to the price. Vande Bharat trains are factory-installed with India’s own train protection system armour, CCTV cameras, fire detection and extinguishing systems as well as emergency talk-back facility. According to Indian Railways, large-scale production is expected to reduce costs over time. As production increases, the per unit cost is likely to reduce.
