Have you ever noticed that fine blue, red or purple veins appear like a net on the skin of your feet or ankles? Many people ignore them considering it to be a minor skin problem, while some consider it to be only a beauty related problem. But the truth is that these spider-like webs seen on the legs, which are called spider veins or varicose veins in medical language, can be a sign of some problem going on inside the body.
Today’s fast-paced life, working for hours sitting on a chair, lack of physical activity, wrong eating habits and increasing weight, all these together gradually weaken the body. The body alerts us through such signals. These veins appearing on the legs can also be such a sign. In such a situation, let us know why this problem of spider web-like veins appearing in your legs also occurs.
What are spider veins?
Spider veins are small dilated veins visible just below the upper surface of the skin. These are often red, blue or purple in color and look like spider webs. There is no pain in the beginning, so people do not take them seriously. But over time, this problem can cause pain, swelling and difficulty in walking.
According to doctors, this problem occurs when the valves present inside the veins of the legs become weak. These valves work to move blood from bottom to top, i.e. towards the heart. When they do not work properly, blood starts accumulating in the legs and the veins expand and look like a web.
Why does this problem occur?
1. Poor blood circulation – Sitting or standing in one place for a long time.
2. Hormonal changes – During pregnancy, menopause or puberty.
3. Genetic reasons – If anyone in the family has already had this problem.
4. Obesity – Increased weight puts extra pressure on the veins.
5. Liver problem – In some cases, liver dysfunction also causes veins to appear on the skin.
6. Too much exposure to sunlight – Due to this, the delicate nerves under the skin can become weak.
Vitamin B12 deficiency can also cause problems
In many cases, the appearance of spider veins on the legs may also be related to vitamin B12 deficiency. This vitamin plays an important role in keeping the nerves strong and maintaining proper blood circulation. When there is a deficiency of B12 in the body, the functioning of the nerves gets affected, blood flow does not occur properly and its effect becomes clearly visible on the skin.
When does this problem become serious?
Initially spider veins just look bad, but if ignored, they can take the form of varicose veins. In this condition the veins become swollen and pain also starts. Varicose veins cause pain or burning sensation in the legs, cramps and heaviness, swelling or redness in the legs, change in skin color, delayed wound healing, and discomfort while standing for a long time. Some doctors say that in serious cases this problem can further lead to the formation of blood clots.
