Venezuela has described this alleged attack as a gross violation of the United Nations Charter. According to the government, this attack is against Articles 1 and 2 of the United Nations Charter, which guarantee the sovereignty of any country, legal equality and prohibition on the use of force. The government says that this attack is a serious threat to international peace and stability, especially the peace of Latin America and the Caribbean region.

What was the stated motive behind the attack?

The Venezuelan government has alleged that the purpose of the attack is to capture the country’s strategic resources, especially oil and mineral reserves, and to forcibly break its political independence. People took to the streets, called for mass movement

The Venezuelan government has called on all social and political forces in the country to activate the mass movement against this alleged imperialist attack. According to the government, the people are fully prepared to defend the sovereignty and peace of the country with the unity of the Bolivarian National Armed Forces and the people-army-police. The government has also announced to lodge a formal complaint with the United Nations Security Council, the United Nations Secretary General, CELAC and the Non-Aligned Movement.

President Maduro declared nationwide state of emergency

After this incident, President Nicolas Maduro has signed an order declaring a state of emergency in the country. He has given instructions to implement all national defense plans under the Constitution and laws related to national security. The President has ordered the immediate deployment of defense operational bodies in all states and municipalities to deal with any possible armed conflict situation.

Emphasis on the right to self-defense

Venezuela, citing Article 51 of the UN Charter, has said that it reserves the right of legitimate self-defense to defend its citizens, its territory and its independence.
