Venezuela’s politics and America’s military action have shaken the world. President Nicolas Maduro, arrested by American soldiers, is now kept in America’s most controversial and scary prison in New York. Maduro’s stay in this prison, infamous for violence, overcrowding, darkness and fear, is raising many questions whether it is just imprisonment or is it also a big message in world politics? Let us find out why it is called America’s most scary and infamous prison.
Maduro’s arrest and bringing to America
President Nicolas Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores have been arrested in the US military action on Venezuela. Maduro was handcuffed when he got off the plane at Stewart Air National Guard Base in New York on Saturday. His first video surfaced, in which he was seen smilingly walking into the facility with two DEA officers. Maduro walked into the hall saying ‘Good night, Happy New Year’ to his colleagues.
American officials had detained Maduro from the military base in Caracas. After reaching New York, his next destination is the Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC).
Why is the Metropolitan Detention Center infamous?
The MDC Metropolitan Detention Center is a federal prison in New York, which was built in the 1990s to reduce overcrowding. This prison is infamous for its filth, lack of staff, violence against prisoners and long power cuts. Many high-profile prisoners have lived here, like singer R. Kelly, Martin Scherli, Jeffrey Epstein’s associate socialite Ghislaine Maxwell and drug cartel leader Ismael ‘El Mayo’ Zambada Garcia, among others.
violence and poor conditions
Violence among prisoners is common in the MDC. Reports suggest that a prisoner was stabbed to death here in June 2024. A month later, another prisoner died in a fight. Earlier in 2019, prisoners were trapped in severe cold and darkness due to power cut for a week. After this, the Justice Department investigated and gave a settlement of 10 million dollars to 1600 affected prisoners.
Such conditions of prisoners have made MDC one of the scariest prisons in the world. This prison can prove to be a mental and physical challenge for Maduro.
Maduro’s legal status
Maduro will be presented in federal court in New York, where charges of drug trafficking and financial crimes could be brought against him. According to American media, this step is part of America’s strict policy and an effort to send a message at the international level.
