Rajya Sabha Chairman and Vice President of the country Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned from his post, taking a shocking decision on Monday (July 21, 2025). This resignation came at a time when the monsoon session of Parliament had started and he had been conducting the proceedings of the Upper House throughout the day. In his resignation sent to President Draupadi Murmu at night, he informed about leaving the post with immediate effect citing health reasons and medical advice. The resignation of the Vice President has now received official approval. President Draupadi Murmu has accepted his resignation. Soon the Gazette (Gazette) notification in this regard will be issued.

Process soon for appointment of new Vice President

Now after the resignation has been accepted by the President, the post of Chairman of Rajya Sabha has become vacant under the constitutional process and the process for the appointment of a new Vice President may start soon. Gazette Notification will soon be released by the concerned department, in which official information will be given for the resignation of the resignation. This is the third time in the history of India when a Vice President is leaving the post before the completion of his term. Earlier, VV Giri and Krishnakant could not complete their term.

Terror was till 2027

Dhankhar’s term was till August 2027, that is, he had more than two years left. In such a situation, a sudden resignation gave rise to many speculation. He expressed gratitude to the President, Prime Minister and Union Cabinet, referring to health reasons in his resignation.

NDA government made presidential candidate

In 2022, the NDA government led by PM Modi declared Jagdeep Dhankhar as the Vice Presidential candidate. In the election held on August 6, he defeated the opposition candidate Margaret Alva by a huge margin. Dhankhar got a total of 528 votes, while Alva got only 182 votes. After this, on 10 August 2022, he was sworn in as the 14th Vice President of India.

Who is Jagdeep Dhankhar?

Jagdeep Dhankhar was the 14th Vice President of India. He was sworn in on 10 August 2022, but resigned on 15 July 2025. He comes from a farmer family of Rajasthan and has been a student of Sainik School and Rajasthan University in Chittorgarh. After studying law, he worked as a lawyer in Rajasthan High Court and Supreme Court. In politics, he started with Congress, later came to BJP and became the Governor of West Bengal in 2019. He has also held responsibility for the post of MP and Minister.
