In Bangladesh, a car driver crushed a Hindu youth working at a petrol pump with his vehicle when he tried to stop him from leaving without paying the price of petrol, killing him on the spot. Police said that this incident which took place in Rajbari district last Friday is the latest incident of violence targeting Hindus in Bangladesh.
‘The Daily Star’ newspaper quoted police officials as saying that the deceased has been identified as Ripon Saha (30), who worked at Karim Petrol Pump located at Golanda Mor.
In the news published on the news portal ‘bdnews24.com’, Rajbari Sadar Police Chief Khondakar Ziaur Rehman has been quoted as saying, ‘We will register a case of murder. When the employee refused to pay the price of petrol, he stood in front of the vehicle and they crushed him and ran away.
Eyewitnesses told the entire incident
According to the police and eyewitnesses, ‘At around 4.30 am on Friday, people in a black SUV reached the petrol pump and filled petrol worth 5,000 taka (about Rs 3,710). He told that when the SUV driver tried to leave without paying the price of petrol, Ripon stood in front of him. The SUV driver ran away from there, crushing Ripon. He told that in this incident Ripon died on the spot.

Police arrested the accused, one of them a BNP party worker
Police said they later seized the SUV and arrested its owner Abdul Hashim alias Sujan (55) and driver Kamal Hussain (43). According to the police, Hashim, a contractor by profession, has been the treasurer of Rajbari district unit of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and former district president of Jubo Dal.
According to the census of 2022, the population of Hindus in Bangladesh is about 1.313 crore, which is about 7.95 percent of the total population of the country.
When are the general elections in Bangladesh?
In early January, the Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council (BHBCUC) had alleged in a statement that communal violence in the country was increasing at an alarming rate as the general election date approached. Voting for the general elections in Bangladesh is to be held on 12 February.
So many deaths occurred in December 2025 alone
BHBCUC alleged that the aim of the violence was to prevent minority voters from voting for candidates of their choice. The council said it recorded 51 incidents of communal violence in December 2025 alone. On December 2 last year, 42-year-old jeweler Prantosh Sarkar was shot dead by miscreants in a school ground in Narsingdi.
On December 18, in Mymensingh city, Dipu Chandra Das, a 25-year-old garment factory worker, was beaten to death by a mob on charges of blasphemy and then his body was burnt. Another Hindu man, Amrit Mandal, was beaten to death on December 24 in Pangsha upazila of Rajbari town on charges of extortion.
On the night of December 31, when 50-year-old Khokon Chandra Das was returning home after closing his shop, miscreants stabbed him several times with a knife and set him on fire. Das died during treatment in the hospital on January 3.
On January 5, unknown assailants attacked 40-year-old grocery shop owner Moni Chakraborty with a sharp weapon in Charsindhur market of Palash upazila, resulting in his death. Rana Pratap Bairagi (38), acting editor of ‘Dainik BD Khabar’ newspaper published from Narail and owner of an ice manufacturing factory, was also shot dead in the head by unknown assailants in Jessore district on January 5. Mithun Sarkar, 25, died on January 6 after he jumped into a canal to escape a mob who accused him of theft in Naugaon district.
Retired school headmaster Jogesh Chandra Roy (70), who took part in the liberation war, and his wife Shubarna Roy were murdered in Taraganj area of Rangpur on December 7 last year. The couple’s blood soaked bodies were found on the kitchen floor of their house.
