At least 26 people were injured in a clash between Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and Jamaat-e-Islami workers on Monday (February 9, 2026) in Baufal Upazila of Patuakhali district of Bangladesh. Three women are also among the injured.
According to the report of ‘The Daily Star’, local people and eyewitnesses told about the incident that on Monday (February 9) at around 12.30 pm, Jamaat women workers were campaigning in support of party candidate Shafiqul Islam Masood from Patuakhali-2 seat in Bhandaria market. Meanwhile, some BNP workers stopped her and accused her of distributing money to buy votes.
As soon as information about this incident was received, other male workers of Jamaat also reached the spot, after which an argument started between the two parties and within no time the incident turned into a violent clash.
The seriously injured were sent for better treatment.
26 people injured in this violent clash were admitted to Baufal Upazila Health Complex. Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Dr Abdur Rauf said that the injured included three women and a seriously injured man had been sent to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College, Barishal for better treatment.
Jamaat workers took out a procession
In protest against this incident, Jamaat workers took out a procession at the upazila headquarters at around 3.30 pm. When the procession reached near the Health Complex, there was once again a situation of chaos and tension between BNP and Jamaat workers. After this, Jamaat workers blocked the Barishal-Baufal road and started demanding the transfer of the police station in-charge (OC). The protesters accused the station in-charge of making recommendations in favor of BNP. Due to which there was road jam for about two hours.
Jamaat made allegations, police station incharge and BNP denied
Jamaat’s upazila secretary Mohammad Khalidur Rahman alleged that BNP workers attacked Jamaat people several times and the police station in-charge kept playing a role in favor of BNP. He claimed that 30 of his workers were injured in this incident. However, police station in-charge Siddiqur Rahman rejected the allegations made by the Jamaat outright. He said that they are fulfilling their responsibilities with complete impartiality and law and order is under control in the entire area.
At the same time, BNP’s upazila coordinator Tasleem Talukdar also denied the allegations of Jamaat. He said that it was the Jamaat workers who attacked his people and now they are making false allegations against him. He also claimed that 20 of his workers were injured in this violent clash.
