Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, the two stares of the Indian cricket team, have disappointed their fans by retiring from Test cricket at almost the same time. Now both will be seen playing only ODI format in international cricket, because after winning the T20 World Cup, both the players took retirement from T20 together. According to Sunil Gavaskar, both players may not play till 2027 ODI World Cup.

Rohit Sharma retired from Test cricket on 7 May 2025. 5 days later, Virat Kohli also made an official announcement to retire from the Test. Both will now play only in ODI format. Everyone hopes that these two veterans played till 2027 World Cup. However, India’s legend Sunil Gavaskar finds so difficult.

What did Gavaskar say to Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli?

In an interview to Sports Today, Sunil Gavaskar said, “I think Rohit and Kohli will not be part of the Indian team in the 2027 ODI World Cup.” Gavaskar feels that of course both are big players but perhaps they do not even play due to their age. Rohit’s age will be 40 and Kohli will be 38 years old.

Gavaskar said that Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are performing brilliantly in the ODI format but the selectors will decide their future. The selection committee will see if it will be part of the team that will play the 2027 World Cup? Will he be able to contribute in the way that he is giving?

Gavaskar further said that if the selectors think that Rohit-Kohli is able to do something by staying in the team, then only he will choose him. However, according to him, he will not be able to play 2027 ODI World Cup. However, Gavaskar admitted that anything could happen in the coming time. He said what should happen in a year. Maybe both come in great form. If he continues to score a century, even God will not be able to exclude him.

Rohit and Kohli’s record in ODIs

Talking about Rohit Sharma’s ODI career, he has scored 11168 runs in 265 innings played in 273 matches. This includes 32 centuries and 58 half -centuries. He is the world’s highest run -scorer in this format, he scored 264 runs against Sri Lanka.

Virat Kohli has scored 14181 runs in 290 innings of 302 ODIs. His highest score in this format is 183 runs. Kohli is the highest century batsman in ODIs, he has scored 51 centuries and 74 half -centuries.
