Can Too Much Vitamin D Be Harmful: Vitamin D is generally known to keep bones strong. Most people take it through sunlight, certain foods or supplements. But in recent years, scientists have also been trying to understand how it affects the brain, especially with age. Recently, a study by Rutgers University has revealed interesting things on this subject. In this research, those women aged between 50 to 70 years who were overweight were included. This is because the fat present in the body determines how vitamin D is stored and used.

What was taken into account?

The aim of the researcher was to know what effect different amounts of Vitamin D have on memory, learning ability and reaction time. These three things keep changing with age and are very important for mental health. For this the women were divided into three groups. One group was given 600 IU of vitamin D daily, which is the generally recommended amount. The second group was given 2000 IU and the third was given 4000 IU, which is considered a high dose. During this time, all the participants were also asked to lose weight, so that overall health can be improved.

What was the result?

The results after one year were quite interesting. Women who took 2000 IU of Vitamin D showed improvement in their memory and ability to learn new things. This indicates that small amounts of vitamin D may be beneficial for some parts of the brain. However, a worrying thing also came to light with this. In the same group, especially in those taking 4000 IU, the reaction time was found to be slow. That means she was taking more time to react to the events happening around her. This is especially important for the elderly, because slow reactions can increase the risk of falling or injury.

What are the problems caused by consuming excessive amounts?

Actually, fast reaction is very important in everyday life. It plays a big role in maintaining balance while crossing the road or while walking. Therefore, the risks associated with taking excessive amounts of Vitamin D cannot be ignored. Some other studies have also revealed that people taking 2000 IU or more of Vitamin D may have an increased risk of falling. It is clear from this that while this vitamin is beneficial, its excessive quantity can also cause harm.
