Sunlight Exposure and HealthOne of the most important things in human life is sunlight. If you do not get proper sunlight, many types of diseases can occur. Bright sunlight in summer and mild sunlight in winter have been a part of people’s daily routine. But now the situation is changing. The pollution spread in cities has not only spoiled the air but has also dulled the brightness of the sunlight. Its direct impact is on our health. Especially on that vitamin, which we know as “Sunshine Vitamin” i.e. Vitamin-D. Let us tell you about it in detail.
Why is pollution blocking sunlight?
Dust, smoke and toxic particles present in the air do not allow the sun’s rays to reach the earth properly. The UVB rays falling on the skin are the force by which the body produces Vitamin D. But when this light collides with the layers of pollution and becomes weak, the body does not get its full benefit. This is the reason why people living in big cities like Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru are suffering from Vitamin D deficiency despite standing in the sun.
Why is the problem so big in India?
The question arises that where there is sunshine throughout the year, how are people struggling with its shortage? There are many reasons. Like people stay inside office or home all day long instead of morning and evening. Due to fashion and sunscreen, we try to avoid the sun. Apart from this, now pollution has also reduced the remaining light. Research shows that people living in polluted areas have to spend more time in the sun, yet they are not able to produce as much Vitamin D as they do by taking sunlight for a while in a clean environment.
What happens due to Vitamin D deficiency?
Vitamin D is very important for bones. Its deficiency increases problems like rickets (crooked bones) in children and osteoporosis in adults. Constant fatigue, muscle pain, depression and falling sick frequently can also be its symptoms. It is surprising that in a country like India, more than 70 percent of the people are suffering from deficiency at some level or the other.
What is necessary to do?
If you want to avoid this, then try to sit in the morning sunlight for 20 to 30 minutes. If you live in a metro city then make a habit of taking sunlight in parks or open places. Eat things like eggs, fish and milk in your diet, which contain Vitamin D. If needed, supplements can also be taken with the advice of a doctor.
