Traveling is fun for some, but for many it also becomes a cause of trouble. Especially during car, bus, train, plane or air travel, many people feel nauseous, dizzy or uneasy. In medical language it is called motion sickness. One out of every three people faces this problem at some time or the other.

Motion sickness is not a problem only for children or the elderly. This can happen to a person of any age and starts being felt as soon as the journey starts. Many people wonder why this happens only to me. But behind this the effect of body and mind is hidden. So let us know why vomiting starts as soon as you sit in a car and in which disease this happens.

What is motion sickness?

Motion sickness is a condition in which you feel nausea, vomiting, dizziness, headache or restlessness during travel. This problem occurs when the brain, eyes and ears do not send the same information. For example, if you are sitting in a car, reading a book or looking at your mobile, your eyes tell your brain that you are not moving. But the balance system inside your ear tells the brain that the body is moving. In this way, when there is a contradiction in signals, the body thinks that something wrong or poisonous has gone inside and this results in vomiting.

How is the brain and balance related?
There are small sensors in our body which are called receptors. These sensors sense the changes in our eyes, ears and body and send messages to the brain. When we travel in a car, train or aeroplane, the information received from eyes, ears and body is not the same. Due to this, the vestibular system i.e. the system that maintains balance gets disturbed. The part of the brain called the brain stem and hypothalamus becomes faster. Due to which nausea, dizziness and sometimes vomiting occur. Therefore, it can be said that motion sickness is the result of a disturbance in the balance system.
Why does vomiting occur during travel?

The mere movement of the vehicle is not the reason. The condition of the stomach and the mode of travel also matter a lot. The vagus nerve of the stomach becomes more active while traveling on an empty stomach. This causes dizziness and restlessness. Apart from this, the possibility of vomiting also increases when traveling after a heavy meal i.e. when the stomach is full. Therefore, it is better to take light food before travelling. Additionally, things like bumpy roads, mountain trails, vehicle shocks, or foul odors in the vehicle can also increase motion sickness. According to doctors, when we sit in the car, the fluid inside the ear moves, causing vibration in the neck and skull. This vibration disturbs the balance in the brain and causes vomiting or dizziness.

Easy ways to avoid motion sickness

1. Avoid heavy food – Eat only light food before travelling.

2. Do not travel on an empty stomach – You can take light snacks or fruits.

3. Doctor’s advice – If medicine is needed, take it as per doctor’s advice.

4. Avoid sleeping in a moving vehicle – Balance may get disturbed while sleeping.

5. Stop the car – Stop the vehicle as soon as you feel nauseated. Avoid getting distracted by mobile or book.

6. Keep body position stable – Reduce movement of head, shoulders, waist and knees.

7. Sitting in the front seat or driving yourself – By doing this it becomes easier to maintain balance. Avoid nicotine and smoking.

8. Listen to light music – This calms the mind and reduces nausea.
