Dr Sunil Rana told TOI that walking speed is now considered a kind of “vital sign”, like pulse or blood pressure. If a person constantly walks slowly, it could be a sign of a weak heart, low muscle strength or some initial problem in the body. Because during walking, many systems of the body work together such as oxygen supply, muscle strength and coordination of the nervous system.

Why is reducing speed dangerous?

If your walking speed has decreased compared to before, then it should not be ignored. This may be a sign that the body is not working as efficiently as before. The condition of muscles and joints can also be estimated from the speed of walking. If there is pain, stiffness or weakness in the body, the person unconsciously starts walking slowly. Especially conditions like osteoarthritis can also affect the walking speed.

How can we know?

The good thing is that you can check your walking speed at home itself. For this, measure a distance of 4-6 meters and walk at a normal speed. Then see how long it takes to fix it. Generally the speed of a healthy person is 1 to 1.4 meters per second. Another easy way is to check whether you are able to talk comfortably while walking or not. If not, it could be a sign of pressure on the heart and lungs. If you want to improve your speed, there is no need to rush. Try to walk a little faster every day, do light strength training a few days a week and pay attention to your body posture. Gradually this improvement will be visible in your fitness also.
