We all eat potatoes and tomatoes often together. Sometimes in vegetables, sometimes in chaat, sometimes in paratha and sauce. But have you ever thought that the relationship of potato is so deep with tomatoes that it is actually born from him. Yes, the latest Scientific Research has opened the 90 million year old Raj.
A new plant was built 90 million years ago
According to the new study, about 9 million years ago, a natural hybridization occurred in South America between a wild plant Etuberosum like tomatoes and potatoes. With this genetics mix, such a new plant was formed, whose food storage started accumulating in the roots. This was the beginning of the crop which the whole world knows today by the name of Aloo.
Which gene became potato strength
Scientists found in this research that two special genes were the most important in making potatoes.
- SP6A (came from tomato) This gene tells the plant that when and how to become tuber under the ground.
- IT1 (Etuberosum) This controls the growth of gene tuber.
That is, both tomato and etuberosum played equal role in making potatoes. One started and the other came to him.
How did research happen
This research is printed in the famous Science Journal Cell. Scientists examined the potatoes grown in more than 450 cultivation and genomes of 56 wild species. Each potato found DNA of both tomato and etuberosum, which made it clear that the potato is actually the hybrid descendant of both.
Potato stuck in the hard climate of Andes
This natural and geneticity of history gave such a power to potatoes that it could flourish without depending on seeds or flowers. Potato tuber himself sprouted and made a new plant. This is the reason that even in the difficult climate of the Andes Mountains, this plant remained saved and gradually became a reliable crop of the whole world.
Potato is not just a vegetable of humans
Today we all consider Aloo as part of the food, but in reality it is one of the most important crops of humans. It has nutrients like carbohydrates, fiber, potassium and magnesium. It is also better for the environment, demands less water, does not surround much land and also emits greenhouse gases.
