Watery Eyes In The Morning: Watering from our eyes can happen due to many reasons. If your eyes feel very moist or watery as soon as you wake up in the morning, it could also be a condition called epiphora. Epiphora means excessive watering of the eyes either because the eyes are producing more tears than necessary or the tear secretion system is not working properly. Come, let us tell you why eyes water in the morning.

Reason for watery eyes in the morning

According to rauteyecare, sometimes these are the common reasons behind watery eyes in the morning. Eyes start producing tears due to sudden change of light. Things like cold air, bright light, smoke, dust, chemicals or mosquito repellent spray can also irritate the eyes and cause watering. Many people suffer from allergic rhinitis, which includes sneezing, runny nose and watery eyes, all of which can be triggered by dust, dirt, pet dander or cold air in the bedroom.

Sometimes it is also a sign of some eye disease.

1. Dry eyes

It sounds strange, but yes, dry eyes can also bring tears. There is a tear film over the eyes which has three layers: mucus, water and oil layer. In dry eyes, tears dry up quickly due to less watery layer or weak oil layer. When the eyes become dry, the body immediately starts producing more water layer. But if the oil layer is weak, then these new tears are unable to stay on the eye and flow out. That’s why the eye remains dry from inside, but water comes out.

2. Eyelids not closing completely during sleep

Some people’s eyelids do not close completely while sleeping, due to which a part of the eye dries up overnight. As soon as you wake up in the morning, the body suddenly produces tears to protect the dry eyes, which makes the eyes watery.

3. Corneal erosion

Sometimes a slight injury, such as a nail or the edge of a paper, occurs on the cornea. It looks fine initially, but the top layer does not stick properly. This layer can peel off again as soon as you open your eyes in the morning, causing symptoms like strong tears, discomfort from pricking light (photophobia).

What to do if eyes water in the morning?

  • Let the light come slowly in the room in the morning and do not let the bright light shine directly.
  • Do not sleep in direct air of fan or AC.
  • To maintain humidity in the room, keep a humidifier or a bowl filled with water.
  • If you are allergic, use clean and washed bedsheet-pillow covers; Air purifier is beneficial.
  • Do not use anti-mosquito spray or things containing strong chemicals in the room at night.

Wear glasses to protect yourself from the cold wind during your morning walk; It may be helpful to administer artificial tears or saline drops before going out. If there is infection at the eyelid margins, oil layer problem, corneal erosion or exposure keratopathy, then doctor’s treatment is necessary.
