China has defended the decision to curb exports of rare minerals and other such items, calling it a legitimate step to safeguard global peace and warned the US that it will take ‘concrete measures’ if US President Donald Trump follows through on his threat of imposing 100 per cent tariffs on Chinese exports.

China on Thursday announced new restrictions on the export of rare minerals, lithium batteries and technologies and equipment related to the mining and processing of rare mineral-based materials. These restrictions, which took effect immediately, also apply to foreign transfer of production technologies.

trade war between two big economies

Beijing said that this decision has been taken keeping in mind the concern that some foreign companies are using materials obtained from China for military purposes. Reacting to China’s move, US President Trump has threatened to impose 100 percent duty on Chinese goods from November 1, following which the trade war between the world’s two largest economies has resumed.

Responding to a question related to Trump’s threat, the Chinese Commerce Ministry in a statement on Sunday (October 12, 2025) accused America of exaggerating the concept of national security.

China’s decision will depend on America’s decision

The statement said, ‘Deliberately threatening to impose higher tariffs is not the right way to reach a rapprochement with China. China’s stance on the trade war is the same as before. We don’t want a trade war, but we’re not afraid of it either. If America insists on going on the wrong path, China will definitely take concrete steps to protect its legitimate rights and interests.
