US Greenland Dispute: The international crisis arising over Greenland is not over yet. No concrete results could be achieved from the important US-led meeting at the White House with the top ministers of Greenland and Denmark. After the meeting, US President Donald Trump has once again given a controversial statement regarding Greenland.
In fact, on Wednesday the foreign ministers of Greenland and Denmark had reached the White House. Here he met US Vice President JD Vance and Foreign Minister Marco Rubio. In this high level meeting, the future of Greenland, regional security and Trump’s statements related to merging Greenland with America were discussed in detail. Denmark, under which Greenland is a self-governing territory, also lodged a strong objection to Trump’s statements.
Greenland made its stand clear
Speaking to the media after the meeting at the White House, Greenland’s Foreign Minister Vivian Motzfeldt said that cooperation with America can be taken forward, but this does not mean that Greenland wants to become a part of America. He clearly said that Greenland has set its boundaries and it is in the interest of all parties to find the right and balanced path on this issue.
Agreement on forming high level working group
At the same time, Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen said that America, Denmark and Greenland have decided to form a high-level working group. This group will work on future strategy and shared solutions. Rasmussen said there still remain fundamental differences with the Trump administration over Greenland’s future. Greenland is a self-governing region of Denmark and efforts will be made to reach a consensus between the three parties on this point. He also said that the atmosphere of the meeting was positive and security related issues were discussed. According to Rasmussen, at present there is no immediate threat from China or Russia that Denmark cannot handle.
Trump said this in the statement
President Trump was involved in another program apart from the White House meeting. There he was questioned about the meeting held with officials of Greenland and Denmark. On this, Trump said that Greenland is very important in terms of national security, not only for America but also for the security of Denmark. Trump claimed that if Russia or China tried to occupy Greenland, Denmark would not be able to do much, whereas America could do a lot. He also said that he cannot rely on Denmark being able to protect itself.
‘We need Greenland’
Trump said that relations between America and Denmark are very good. He said, ‘Now let’s see what happens next, but we need this.’ Later he said, ‘I think some solution will emerge.’ Shortly before this, Trump had also taken a tough stance on Greenland on his social media platform Truth Social. He wrote that America needs Greenland because without it the American goal related to the Golden Dome cannot be achieved. Trump clearly said that he will not accept anything less than this.
