The Supreme Court has expressed the possibility of sending the case back to the Delhi High Court to stop the release of the film ‘Udaipur Files – Kanhaiya Lal Taylor Murder’. The case was heard on Thursday (July 24, 2025) and the court said that it would hear 10-15 minutes on Friday and then it can be sent back to the High Court.
According to the report of the news agency PTI, Justice Suryakant and Justice J.K. Bagchi said that he will hear 10 to 15 minutes the case and issue necessary orders and the matter can be sent back to the Delhi High Court. The bench said that the petition of Mohammad Javed, accused in the Kanhaiya Lal murder case, can also be sent to the High Court. Mohammad Javed has requested to stop the release of the film till the completion of the hearing.
During the hearing Central Film Certification Board (CBFC) Regarding the petitioner Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind President Arshad Madni said that the committee which has allowed the release of the film, Many of his members were members of the same ruling political party. The bench said on his argument that this happens in all governments and their appointments cannot be challenged. The Supreme Court deferred the hearing for Friday and expressed the possibility that the case could be sent back to the Delhi High Court.
The Center had constituted a committee regarding the film, which has allowed the film to be released with six cuts. The Supreme Court was informed on July 21 that the Center’s committee had passed the order in its revision jurisdiction and Tushar Mehta had argued that any further action would be a violation of Article 19 other than the things suggested by the competent authority.
The Supreme Court on July 16 had asked the filmmakers to wait for the committee’s decision to hear the objections against the film. The Supreme Court told Productions that due to the release of the film, the image of Kanhaiya Lal tailor murder accused cannot be compensated, but the filmmakers may benefit financially.
Earlier, the Delhi High Court, while hearing the petition of Arshad Madni, had stayed the film’s release on July 10 until the central government takes a decision on the petitions seeking a permanent ban on it.
The filmmakers claimed that they have received a certificate from the Central Film Certification Board (CBFC), in which the board suggested cutting 55 scenes. The film was scheduled to release on 11 July. Udaipur’s tailor Kanhaiya Lal is based on brutal murder in June 2022. Mohammad Riyaz and Mohammad Gaus are accused in this case.
Both released a video after the incident in which they said that in support of the controversial remarks of former Bharatiya Janata Party leader Nupur Sharma on Prophet Mohammed, Kanhaiya Lal Sharma shared a post on social media, in response to which he killed Taylor.
The case was investigated by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and the accused were booked under the Rigid illegal activities Prevention Act (UAPA) besides the sections of the Indian Penal Code. This case is pending in the special NIA court of Jaipur.
