It has been almost four years since the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine. When Russia attacked in 2022, there was tremendous enthusiasm and solidarity among the people of Ukraine. Lakhs of citizens had joined the army to protect the country. Someone from every house took charge. At that time it seemed that every citizen of Ukraine had become a soldier, but with the passage of time the situation has completely changed. Now this war has not become a symbol of pride for the people, but of fear and helplessness.

Now forcibly recruiting people

According to the report of British newspaper The Sun, more than 1 million people voluntarily joined the Ukrainian army in the initial months of the war. But as the war dragged on, people’s enthusiasm waned. To avoid recruitment, many people even started buying medical certificates so that they could be declared ‘unfit’. When the government cracked down on corruption, it abolished medical commissions. Despite this, now the army is forced to recruit forcibly.

According to reports, now army personnel stand at checkpoints in many cities of Ukraine. Any male aged between 18 to 60 years who passes through there, his identity is checked. If he comes under the scope of recruitment, he is directly sent to the recruitment centre. In many cases, soldiers force people into minibuses. In Ukraine this process is now being called ‘Basification’.

Dissatisfaction is increasing in the society

Now Ukrainian society is divided into two parts. On one side there are those who are fighting on the front, and on the other side there are those who are living a normal life in the cities. Female officer Yulia Mikitenko says, “When I see people roaming around with their families, I get angry. My soldiers do not get this freedom.”

Lakhs injured, thousands deaths

According to government figures, more than 45,000 soldiers have been killed so far and about 3.8 lakh have been injured. This long war has broken the courage of the people of Ukraine. Now there is a need for soldiers, but people have become afraid of recruitment. What was once a symbol of patriotism has now become a tiresome and painful compulsion for the people.
