Winter is at its peak in entire North India including Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Bihar, Rajasthan, Punjab and Haryana. Dense fog in the morning and night is affecting road, rail and air traffic. The Indian Meteorological Department has warned that the situation will not become easy for the coming one week and the cold will continue.

According to the Meteorological Department, today (January 5, 2026), cold day like conditions may arise in some areas of Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, West Madhya Pradesh and Bihar. Along with this, there is a possibility of cold wave in Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh from January 5 to 8, in West Rajasthan from January 5 to 9 and in East Rajasthan from January 5 to 10. Jharkhand may also experience severe cold on 6th and 7th January.

Chances of rain and snowfall in hilly areas

IMD has informed that on January 5 and 6, there may be light rain or snowfall in the high altitude areas of North and Central Kashmir. There is a possibility of rain or snow in some parts of Uttarakhand on January 6. According to meteorologists, the minimum temperature in Central and Eastern India may drop by 2 to 4 degrees for the next three days.

Cold and bad air in Delhi-NCR

The weather will be mostly clear in Delhi and surrounding areas, but light fog may be seen in the morning. The minimum temperature in the capital has been recorded around 7 degrees Celsius. Also, the air quality still remains in the poor category. The effect of cold wave may be visible in some areas of Delhi on January 6.

Chilliness will increase in Uttar Pradesh and Jharkhand

The cold is continuously increasing in Uttar Pradesh. Cities like Kanpur, Lucknow, Prayagraj, Varanasi, Meerut and Noida will feel more cold due to north-westerly winds. At the same time, the effect of cold wave and dense fog will be seen in Jharkhand, due to which life and traffic can be affected.

Most cold in Kashmir valley

The temperature has fallen further in Jammu and Kashmir. The mercury in Gulmarg has reached minus 6.5 degrees, while in Pahalgam also the temperature remains around minus 5 degrees. The weather department has indicated that the cold will increase further in the coming days.

A word of caution though

The Meteorological Department and the administration have appealed to the people to be careful during cold and fog, avoid unnecessary travel and take special care of the elderly and children. The coming days are going to be very cold for North India.
