Why Am I Gaining Weight On Healthy Diet: You are eating healthy food, staying away from junk food and staying active, yet your weight is increasing? In such a situation, the question comes in our mind that why does this happen? This question troubles many people these days. Often it seems that despite all the efforts the body is not supporting us. But doctors say that it is not just a matter of calories or hard work, rather complex metabolic processes of the body work behind it.

Experts say that sometimes the body adapts itself to new circumstances. When low calories are consumed for a long time, the body starts saving its energy. This is called metabolic adaptation. That means the body starts burning fewer calories than before. In such a situation, the same diet, which earlier helped in weight loss, now starts increasing or keeping the weight stable.

Insulin resistance is also a big reason

Apart from this, insulin resistance can also be a major reason. Insulin not only controls blood sugar but also controls the process of storing fat in the body. When the body is no longer sensitive to insulin, insulin levels increase and the body starts storing fat instead of burning it. This condition can also be seen in those people who are taking completely healthy diet from outside.

What do experts say?

Dr. Moinuddin told TOI that another important role is played by the hormone leptin, which signals the brain that the stomach is full, but when leptin resistance occurs in the body, this signal does not work properly. The result is that the person starts eating a little more than necessary without realizing it, which gradually causes weight gain. Hormonal imbalance can also be a major reason behind weight gain. Just as metabolism slows down in hypothyroidism, PCOS affects fat storage in women and in Cushing’s syndrome, increased cortisol causes fat accumulation in the body. All these conditions make weight gain easier.

Eating healthy also increases weight

Many times we forget that even healthy food can increase weight if consumed in excess. Dry fruits, fruits, whole grains and smoothies are certainly nutritious, but they are also high in calories. If their consumption exceeds the requirement, the body starts storing excess energy in the form of fat. Not only food, but lifestyle also plays an important role in this. Conditions like less sleep, more stress and inflammation in the body affect metabolism. Lack of sleep activates hormones that increase appetite, while stress increases cortisol, which helps in weight gain.
