Bad dreams occur during fever: Getting sick is not an easy task for a human being. There can be different types of flu, such as runny nose, continuous sneezing, body ache and high fever. All these symptoms make daily routine difficult. The problems do not end here, but many times when we go to sleep to rest, another challenge comes to the fore. Generally, dreams are most realistic in REM sleep i.e. rapid eye movement stage. According to a study, 94 percent of people described their fever dreams as negative and disturbing. This means that during a high fever, the brain processes emotions and memories differently, making dreams more strange, scary or emotional.

Why are these dreams so strange?

When fever occurs, it becomes difficult to control body temperature. This condition is sometimes explained by the overheating brain theory. When the brain gets heated, its ability to think and understand is affected. This affects sleep and dreams become strange and emotionally intense. The body temperature is already imbalanced during REM sleep, and fever further increases this imbalance. As a result dreams can seem very strange and scary. Some people see walls moving, giant insects, darkness spreading, or strange shaped creatures. All these are considered common symptoms of fever dreams.

How to deal?

It is not always possible to stop fever dreams completely, but you can reduce them with some easy measures.

  • Drink adequate amount of water and eat tasty food.
  • Keep the sleeping environment comfortable and the temperature of the room balanced.
  • Take fever reducing medicines as per doctor’s advice.
  • Before sleeping, adopt relaxation techniques like deep breathing, meditation or light stretching.
