After this, at the beginning of the second day, Roston Chase was given a knotout after an appeal off Josh Hazlewood. In DRS, the third umpire admitted that the ball was first bang, so he was called notout, but after that in the 50th over, Chase was again given LBW out off Pat Cummins. This time there were ‘Spikes’ on Ultra-Eudge in DRS, that is, the ball was seen touching the bat, yet the third umpire said that there was a gap between the bat and the ball and Chase was called out. On this decision, the commentator Ian Bishop said on-air, “I do not agree with this decision because the ball is first hit by the bat.”
In the 58th over of the West Indies innings, Alex Carrie lashed out by Shai Hope with one hand. The field umpire sent the verdict to the third umpire and the third umpire called it out, while the ball was seen touching the ground while Carrie fell in the replay. This decision was overshadowed by the West Indies innings and the team was reduced to 190 runs.
Coach Darren Sammy’s anger exploded
After all these decisions, West Indies coach Darren Sammy said clearly after the day’s play is over, “You don’t want the decision to go to the umpires during the match, but when such decisions are made one after the other, it becomes necessary to raise the question.” He also added that these mistakes have an impact not only on the scoreboard, but also on the defeat and victory of the match.
