The successful captain of the Indian cricket team and the best wicket-keeper batsman, MS Dhoni is an inspiration for cricketers all over the world. His following is also in Pakistan. The film based on Dhoni’s journey to become a cricketer inspired a Pakistani cricketer to return to cricket. Usman Tariq, who made it to the Pakistan team for the T20 series against South Africa, said that he had left the game after playing in the local circuit but the film on Dhoni inspired him to return to cricket.
Usman Tariq has said that after watching the film made on the life of MS Dhoni, he left his career in Dubai and entered cricket. This film inspired him to work hard and fulfill his dreams again.
27-year-old Tariq has been selected in Pakistan’s T20 International team for the first time for the three-match series against South Africa. Tariq played in the Caribbean Premier League this year and was successful in taking 20 wickets. He stood second after former South African spinner Imran Tahir.
“After not being selected, I left the game and was working as a salesman in a purchasing company in Dubai. There I watched ‘MS Dhoni: The Untold Story’ and it inspired me a lot. I left the job and returned to Pakistan to play cricket again,” Tariq told Telecom Asia Sports on Tuesday.
The film M.S. made on Dhoni’s life. Dhoni: The Untold Story was released in 2016. Tariq was selected by Quetta Gladiators for the 2024 edition of the Pakistan Super League (PLS), but his contract was canceled after his bowling action was found to be illegal.
His action is considered strange. He pauses a lot while bowling, stopping completely for about two seconds, and then bowls off-break balls with his side-arm action. It looks similar to Ravichandran Ashwin, but the former Indian spinner’s break is not as long as Tariq. Ashwin’s bowling action was never reported.
Tariq said his elbow is unusual, having two corners instead of one. He argued, “I was born with a peculiar right elbow which has two corners.” After his bowling action was found correct, Tariq is ready to play in the Caribbean Premier League 2025 and play for Pakistan.
