Smartphone Tips: Have you ever noticed that a small orange, green or gray light sometimes flashes at the top of your smartphone’s screen or in the status bar? Many users get scared after seeing this and wonder whether their phone is being spied on. But there is no need to panic, these lights mean something else. These signals are related to the privacy and security of your phone.
orange light
An orange dot or light appears at the top of the screen whenever your phone’s microphone is being used by an app. Apple first added this feature to its iPhone and now it is also included in Android 12 and later versions.
green light
If green light is visible on your screen then it means that the camera is active. The green light remains lit even if the microphone is being used along with the camera. This happens when you open a video call, Instagram Reel, Zoom or camera app.
gray light
In some smartphones, gray or white light appears when system sensors such as location, Bluetooth, or proximity sensors are active. This light indicates that your phone is taking data from some sensors but it does not necessarily mean hacking or spying.
How to stay safe?
Always check app permissions.
Do not allow unknown apps to access the camera or microphone.
Go to Settings → Privacy → Indicators to see which apps are using these features.
The real purpose of these lights is to protect your privacy and not to scare you. If you are alert and pay attention to your app permissions, no app will be able to spy on you.
