Indian batsman Tilak Verma has undergone surgery for his groin injury, due to which he has been ruled out of the first three matches of the upcoming T20 International series against New Zealand starting from January 21. Due to this injury, his participation in the T20 World Cup to be held next month has also been questioned.
This 23-year-old player was taken to the hospital in Rajkot after complaining of severe pain. He was in Rajkot with the Hyderabad team for the Vijay Hazare Trophy ODI Championship. The five-match T20 series against New Zealand will begin in Nagpur after the three ODIs starting on Sunday.
A Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) official told PTI, “Tilak Verma, who is playing in Rajkot with the Hyderabad team for the Vijay Hazare tournament, complained of severe pain in his groin. He was immediately taken to Gokul Hospital, where on scanning, testicular torsion (sudden severe pain) was detected and immediate surgery was advised.
He said, “We took advice from our experts and they also agreed with this. Tilak’s surgery was successful and he is fine now. “After discussion with the medical panel, we will inform you as soon as we have information about his improvement in health and the likely timing of his return to the game.”
In a statement issued later on Thursday, BCCI said that Tilak Verma’s surgery was done on Wednesday.
BCCI said, “Indian batsman Tilak Verma underwent surgery for a stomach related problem in Rajkot on Wednesday, January 7.” He was discharged from the hospital on Thursday morning and is scheduled to return to Hyderabad on Friday. At present his condition is stable and recovery is going well. ,
“After complete recovery and satisfactory wound healing, Tilak will resume physical training and gradually return to skill-based activities,” the board said. ,
The board said, “He has been dropped from the first three T20 International matches against New Zealand.” His availability for the remaining two matches will be assessed based on his progress during the ‘return-to-training’ and ‘skill phase’. The fourth and fifth T20 matches of the series will be held on January 28 and 31 respectively.
The T20 World Cup to be jointly hosted by India and Sri Lanka will start from February 7. India will play its first match against America in Mumbai while the co-host team will face Namibia in Delhi on 12 February.
