Indian High Commissioner Dinesh K. Patnaik rejected Canada’s old allegations linking New Delhi to the murder of the Sikh separatist leader, saying the case was against four individuals and not the Indian government.
In an interview given to ‘CBC News’ on Tuesday (January 13, 2026), Dinesh Patnaik also underlined that nothing has been achieved so far from the investigation of the Air India bomb blast and not a single person has been convicted in this case, while New Delhi has been talking about terrorism in Canada for the last 40 years.
Relations between India and Canada became strained when then Prime Minister Justin Trudeau alleged in September 2023 that Indian agents were possibly involved in the murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar outside a gurudwara in the city of Surrey on June 18 that year.
India had declared Nijjar a terrorist in 2020 and had completely rejected these allegations, calling them absurd and motivated. In recent months, both countries have taken several steps to normalize their relations. They also agreed to restore several mechanisms to advance relations in various fields.
Dinesh Patnaik was asked how the two countries would overcome the ‘gap’ of more than a year after Trudeau’s allegations. He said, ‘Well, where is the proof? You keep saying every time that there is reliable information, is that right?
The Indian diplomat said, ‘We have always said that this is absurd and ridiculous. We don’t do that. There is no evidence for these allegations. It is always easy to make allegations. Dinesh Patnaik also said that the investigation into the Air India bomb blast (June 1985) has not yielded any results yet. He said, ‘Nothing has happened at the ground level. We have been talking about terrorism in Canada for the last 40 years. What has anyone done about this? Not a single person has been found guilty.
He said, ‘There is a case going on in Surrey, in which it is clearly stated that this case is against four persons. There is no case against the Government of India. The Indian government never takes such action… never.
He said that if Canada provides evidence, India will take action. He said, ‘We need evidence from you, only then we will be able to take action.’ Dinesh Patnaik once again said that Canada is only giving information, not any evidence. He gave examples of many such cases in which prior information given by India was not acted upon, but it was later proved to be correct.
He said, ‘When you accuse us, what happens here is that… you need evidence for my allegations, you don’t need evidence for your allegations?’ The High Commissioner said, ‘When I make allegations against you and you say, ‘the evidence is not enough’, then I agree with it. And I say, ‘Yes, you are saying that the evidence is not enough, when I get the evidence, I will give it to you’.
He said, ‘When you make allegations against me, and I tell you, ‘the evidence is not enough’, then please accept it with the same readiness with which you have made it.’ When the interviewer said, ‘This is about India’s activities. This is about allegations about the Government of India’, then Patnaik said that the Government of India never does anything like this.
He said, ‘If there are people in the Indian government who have done this, and you give us evidence, we will take action against them. We have never said anything to the contrary.
