When to get CRP blood test: When there is any infection or inflammation in the body, the body itself tries to recognize and fight it. In this process, the liver makes a special protein which is called C-reactive protein or CRP. When the level of this protein increases, it indicates that inflammation or infection is present somewhere in the body. This is why doctors often advise patients to undergo CRP test. This is a simple blood test, but its results can indicate many serious diseases. Let us tell you when this test is done and at what age it is appropriate to get it done.

What is CRP test?

Now let us come to why its test is done. The CRP test measures the amount of this protein present in the blood. According to the Mayo Clinic, when there is infection or injury in the body, the liver immediately increases the level of CRP. Normally its quantity in the blood is very low, but if this level is found increased, then it can be a sign of some kind of inflammation or infection.

Which diseases are detected by CRP test?

When there is a serious infection in the body, such as sepsis, the CRP level increases rapidly. The Cleveland Clinic report states that this test helps determine the intensity of inflammation in such cases. Apart from this, in autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and lupus, the body attacks its own cells. Even in these situations, the level of CRP is found to be increased, from which the activity of the disease can be estimated. CRP can also increase in inflammatory bowel diseases. There are some tests, called HS-CRP, which are useful in assessing the health of the heart. If its level is continuously increased, it can be a sign of inflammation in the blood vessels of the heart and the risk of heart attack in future.

At what age should CRP test be done?

Generally, not every person needs to get this test done. But if there are frequent infections, persistent fever, joint pain, fatigue or symptoms of any serious illness, then the doctor may recommend it. According to Times of India, in view of the increasing cases of heart disease, it may be beneficial to get the hs-CRP test done from time to time after the age of 30 to 40, especially if there is a history of heart disease in the family.
