Mahatma Gandhi Gram Swaraj Yojana: Today i.e. on 1 February 2026, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented Budget 2026 in Parliament. A major focus in the budget was on taking the rural economy and traditional industries forward in the new framework. In this context, Mahatma Gandhi Gram Swaraj Yojana was announced. This scheme has been linked to the Samarth 2.0 mission to modernize the textile skills eco system.

In this scheme, Khadi, handloom and handicrafts are not given mere cultural identity. Rather, it is an attempt to establish it as a strong livelihood model. The scheme completely emphasizes on technology, skill and market connect with natural, man-made and new age fibres. Which will increase employment, production and income by providing organized support to village-based artisans.

Village craftsmanship will get a boost

The objective of Mahatma Gandhi Gram Swaraj Initiative is to provide a common platform to the artisans scattered in the villages. Khadi, handloom and handicrafts will be taken out of local identity and converted into organized livelihood model. For this, emphasis will be laid on cluster based work, design support, training and market connect.

The scheme is going to promote the use of natural, man-made and new age fibres. So that the products are as per modern demand. In this, local artisans will get good quality tools, proper guidance regarding design and new means of selling products. The objective of the scheme is that the products made in the village reach the market directly and the artisan gets the right price for his work.

These people will be able to take advantage

Carpenters, handloom artisans, carpet weavers, artisans associated with Khadi and handicrafts will benefit from this scheme. The government will provide help in purchasing modern machines and tools. So that both the speed and quality of work improves. The textile skills eco system will be updated through the Samarth 2.0 mission, which will integrate training, technology and marketing. There will be special focus on increasing the annual income of artisans. Better production, better packaging and direct market connectivity will increase the demand for their products. Due to this, traditional skills will simply not survive. Rather, it will become a source of good income.
