What is Platform Fee, due to which increasing will make ordering food on Zomato and Swiggy expensive?

Zomato platform fee: Online food delivery platform Zomato has once again increased its platform fee. The company has increased its platform fees from Rs 12.50 to Rs 14.90 per order from last Friday, which is an increase of Rs 2.40.

What is platform fee?

Platform fee is a kind of charge which every customer has to pay. The delivery charge goes to the rider, but the platform fee goes directly into the company’s pocket. The platform fee does not depend on the amount of food you have ordered. This amount is already fixed.

Companies charge platform fees to cover operating expenses, manage the app, and make profits. The rise in platform fees is part of a larger trend of rising costs in the food delivery industry as companies continue to try to improve their margins and manage operational expenses.

Zomato’s rival company Swiggy is also currently charging a platform fee of Rs 14.99 (including GST) on every order.

Why did the company do this?

Over the last few years, Zomato has gradually increased this fee to Rs 14.90 per order. This increase may slightly increase the total cost for customers ordering food online. This increase in fees has come amid rising prices of crude oil, due to which the cost of logistics and delivery is increasing. The company is doing this to manage its increased expenses.

How much will be the benefit?

It is being said that due to the increase in platform fees by Rs 2.40 per order, the company is expected to earn additional profit of about Rs 64-65 crore every three months.
