The US government has started investigating at least 175 companies for possible abuse of the H-1B visa program. This visa scheme allows American companies to hire foreign expert workers in specific fields such as technology and engineering.
The government says that this step has been taken with the aim of protecting American jobs and giving priority to local employees over foreign professionals. President Trump’s administration has recently taken many major decisions regarding immigration reform and job protection.
What is ‘Project Firewall’?
In September, the Labor Department had started ‘Project Firewall’. Its purpose was to prevent companies from hiring foreign workers at low wages and to ensure that qualified American workers get jobs.
Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-Deremer said, “We are taking every possible step to prevent abuse of H-1B visas. For the first time, I am personally certifying these investigations to protect American jobs.”
Campaign launched on social media
Recently, the Labor Department also launched a campaign on social media, accusing some companies of replacing young American workers with cheap foreign workers. In this campaign, India was especially mentioned as the biggest beneficiary of H-1B visa. The message was clear that the American dream was snatched away from American workers and jobs were given to foreign workers through misuse of H-1B visas.
American government’s purpose
The government has stressed that it will hold companies accountable and restore the American dream for American citizens. The H-1B visa has long been a means of bringing global talent into the US tech industry, but it has now become a central issue in the debate over job security and immigration reform.
