The biggest question in the minds of parents regarding admission in the first class across the country is that what should be the correct age of the child. After the arrival of the new education policy i.e. NEP 2020, now efforts are being made to make it uniform in the entire country. According to the policy, the minimum age of a child for admission in class 1 has been fixed at 6 years. Its objective is that the child can get three years of pre-school or kindergarten education before going to school, so that his early development can be improved. However, the cut-off date varies slightly across states, causing confusion among many parents.
What changed NEP 2020?
For the first time, the new education policy talked about implementing a uniform age limit across the country. Earlier, in many states, children were sent to Class 1 as soon as they completed 5 years, which increased the pressure of studies on them. Now the objective of the policy is that children start formal education only after completing three years of pre-school education. According to NEP, the age of the child should be at least 6 years at the time of admission in class 1. With this, language, social behaviour, ability to understand and emotional stability develop better in the child.
Are there different rules across states?
Although the policy is the same, states have made slight variations at their own level, especially in the matter of cut-off date. This is the reason why there is a slight difference in the age of admission in different states.
Delhi rule
Delhi government has made it clear that from the session 2026-27, the age of the child will be required to be 6 years by 31st March in all schools. This rule is completely in accordance with NEP 2020.
Model of Haryana and Uttar Pradesh
Both Haryana and UP are following the rule of 6 years of age till April 1. However, in Haryana, giving some relief in some cases, there is a possibility of giving admission to children who turn 6 years of age by September.
Punjab guidelines
Punjab is also making it mandatory for the child to be 6 years of age by 1st April as per NEP. There may be slight relaxation in some schools, but the same rule will apply on a large scale.
Some relief in Maharashtra
Maharashtra is among those states where parents get some extra time. Here, admission in first class can be given even if the child is 6 years old by 30th June. This flexibility gives parents options, especially for children born in April-May.
