In the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday, Congress President and Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge launched a scathing attack on the Modi government and said that China has entered Ladakh, but the government is not daring to stop it or speak against it. Kharge sarcastically asked, ‘What benefit did the country get from the 56-inch chest?’ On this statement, an uproar started in the House and BJP members expressed strong protest.
Political conflict over Vande Mataram
Kharge, while cornering the government on the issue of Vande Mataram, said that he has been singing this song for the last 60 years and has been singing it in the House for 30-35 years as an MLA and MP. He alleged that those who did not sing Vande Mataram earlier are now using it as a political weapon. He said that Congress had started the tradition of singing Vande Mataram in its conventions and when freedom fighters were going to jail, ‘those who are distributing patriotism certificates today were doing the job of the British.’
‘Modi and Shah are distorting history’
Kharge accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah of distorting history to humiliate the Congress. He said that the decision regarding Vande Mataram was taken by the collective decision of Congress leaders, which included Nehru, Gandhi, Maulana Azad and Subhash Chandra Bose.
