When did it start?
The interesting thing is that IPS service was started not after independence, but during the British era. Then it was called Imperial Police and in 1948 its name was changed to Indian Police Service. Today IPS, like IAS, is a part of the All India Service of the country.
eligibility requirements
To become an IPS, some basic qualifications are necessary. Candidate must be an Indian citizen, aged between 21 to 32 years, must have passed graduation and limit of attempts is applicable as per UPSC rules. Physical fitness is also an important part of this service—the minimum height for male candidates is 165 cm and for female candidates is 150 cm.

The path to becoming an IPS passes through the Civil Services Examination of UPSC. While filling the form, candidates indicate their choice between IAS and IPS. Service is allotted on the basis of rank and seniority. After selection, both IAS and IPS first receive joint training for three months at the Lal Bahadur Shastri Academy in Mussoorie. After this, the rigorous training of IPS officers continues for about a year at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Police Academy in Hyderabad.

Career growth is also the biggest strength of IPS. An IPS officer in the state can reach the level of DGP, whereas at the Centre, the heads of CBI, IB and RAW also become IPS officers. Important posts like National Security Advisor (NSA) also remain open for IPS.
How much salary?
Talking about salary, according to the 7th Pay Commission, IPS officers get a salary ranging from Rs 56,100 to Rs 2,25,000. As the rank increases, salary, facilities and power all increase. Government house, vehicle, security, staff and many other benefits are also available.

The first post of an IPS officer is usually as DSP. From the very beginning, the officer has a huge responsibility for the law and order of the district. From riot control to investigation of major crimes, everything happens under the supervision of IPS officers. Talking about dress code, the khaki uniform of IPS is considered a symbol of both respect and authority across the country. Whereas some categories are given a relaxation of 5 cm in height.
