JEE exam is considered to be the biggest milestone for millions of students who dream of becoming engineers in India. Every year, along with 12th, many students prepare for this examination by working hard day and night. But during preparation, a question comes in the mind of almost every student and parent that what is the difference between JEE Main and JEE Advanced. The names of both are similar, the syllabus is also almost the same, yet their rules, standards and objectives are different.
What is JEE exam?
JEE i.e. Joint Entrance Examination is the country’s biggest engineering entrance examination. Through this one can get admission in big and renowned engineering colleges of the country. This examination is conducted in two stages – first JEE Main and second JEE Advanced. Both the exams are related to each other, but not the same.

JEE Main is organized by the National Testing Agency i.e. NTA. This examination is considered the first step in the world of engineering. Through JEE Main, students get admission in 31 NITs, 26 IIITs, many government technical institutes and many private colleges of the country. Along with this, there is also a sorting exam for JEE Main and JEE Advanced. That means, unless you pass JEE Main, you will not get a chance to appear for JEE Advanced.
What is JEE Advanced?
JEE Advanced is organized every year by different IITs of the country. This exam is considered more difficult. Through this one can get admission in 23 IITs of the country. JEE Advanced is the most important examination for students who dream of studying in IIT. Only a limited number of students who score good marks in JEE Main get a chance to appear in JEE Advanced.
How many times can you take the exam?
There is a limit on attempts in both JEE Main and JEE Advanced. JEE Main students can appear a total of three times while in 12th and thereafter for two consecutive years. Whereas JEE Advanced can be given only twice, in the year of 12th and the next year. After this you don’t get a chance.

- JEE Main is a three-hour computer-based examination. In this, questions are asked from Physics, Chemistry and Maths and all three have equal weightage. It includes multiple choice questions and numerical questions. In some questions, marks are deducted for wrong answers.
- There are two papers in JEE Advanced, Paper 1 and Paper 2. Both are of three hours each. The style of questions is different in this. Sometimes multiple choice, sometimes numerical and sometimes matching type questions are asked. Its pattern may change slightly every year.
