Parliament session: The Narendra Modi government said on Friday (March 21, 2025) that no fee has been imposed on any particular country including mutual tariff on India by the United States. In response to a question, this information was given by Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Jitin Prasad in Rajya Sabha. US President Donald Trump has repeatedly criticized India’s high tariff.
In response to a question by CPI (M) MP John Britas, he said, “Till date, no country has been imposed any country-specific duty including mutual duty on India. The US has imposed additional duty on steel and aluminum imports from all countries without any exemption.” Prasad further said, “The impact of the fees which are higher than the existing additional charges is being closely evaluated.”
‘India wants to increase business with America’
The minister said, “The two countries issued a joint statement on February 13, 2025, with their commitment to deepen economic relations. Under the ambitious Mission 500, the two countries have to increase the US-India trade by 2030 to increase more than $ 500 billion and can be achieved by deepening business relations in different fields.”
He said, “Both countries are committed to interacting on mutually beneficial, bilateral trade agreement, under which the country will focus on increasing the market access, reducing tariffs and non-tariff barriers, increasing supply chain integration and resolving major trade issues bilaterally.”
What did Donald Trump say?
On Thursday, US President Donald Trump said that he has very good relations with India, but his only problem with the country is that it is one of the most tariffs in the world. Trump said, “I believe that they will reduce the tariffs to a great extent, but from April 2 we will charge them the same tariffs that they recover from us.”
