Russian President Vladimir Putin has said that if US President Donald Trump wants to buy Greenland, then its price from Denmark could be between 200 to 250 million dollars (about Rs 23 billion). Putin said this in the meeting of the Security Council of Russia on 21 January 2026. He clarified that this matter is not related to Russia. America and Denmark will resolve this among themselves.
What price did Putin put on Greenland?

Giving a historical example, Putin said that Russia had sold Alaska to America for 7.2 billion dollars in the 19th century i.e. in 1867. According to today’s price, this amount is approximately 158 million dollars. The area of Alaska is 1.717 million square kilometers, while the area of Greenland is more than 2.166 million square kilometers, i.e. slightly larger. On this basis, Putin has estimated the value of Greenland at 200-250 million dollars. He said that this amount can be easily paid for America.
Denmark sold Virgin Islands to America
Putin reminded another historical fact that in 1917, Denmark had sold the Virgin Islands to America. He took a dig at Denmark by saying that Denmark has always treated Greenland like a colony and has treated the people there very strictly or cruelly. But Putin stressed that Russia has no interest in this matter. He said, ‘It doesn’t matter to us at all. I think they will resolve it amongst themselves.
Trump talked about framework regarding Greenland
This comment has come at a time when Trump has reiterated his desire to buy Greenland at the World Economic Forum in Davos. Trump had earlier threatened to impose tariffs or use force, but now he has said that he will not use force and will not impose tariffs on Europe. He has talked about agreeing on a ‘framework’. Denmark had opposed Trump’s threats and said that Greenland was not going to be sold.
This comment of Putin is a taunt for Europe, because it seems to add salt to the growing differences between America and Europe. Russia did not openly oppose Trump’s move, but called it a US-Denmark bilateral issue. Greenland is strategically important in the Arctic region, where it has mineral resources and military importance.
