Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday attacked opposition parties for targeting the ruling ‘Mahayuti’ for unopposed victory at 68 seats in the upcoming municipal elections. He sarcastically asked what he could do if the opposition parties suffered a setback. Taking aim at his rivals at a rally in Dhule in North Maharashtra, the Chief Minister said, “What should I do if you feel like chilli?” Devendra Fadnavis was addressing a rally on January 15 for the elections of 29 municipal corporations of the state.
Expressed gratitude to voters on unopposed victory in Dhule
The Chief Minister thanked the voters for electing four Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) councilors unopposed in Dhule. “We accept this support wholeheartedly,” he said. The CM said that so far 35 Lok Sabha members have been elected unopposed, out of which 33 were elected during the Congress rule.
Questioning the opposition’s criticism on the issue, Fadnavis said, “If unopposed elections are held during your tenure, there is no threat to democracy, but if this happens in our time, then democracy is in danger.”
What did CM Fadnavis say about Dhule?
Describing Dhule as the gateway to Maharashtra, Fadnavis said that on one side of this city lies Gujarat and on the other side Madhya Pradesh. The Chief Minister said, “After the formation of the corporation in 2003, there was no development in Dhule until BJP came to power.”
The issue of unopposed victory of ‘Mahayuti’ candidates ahead of the civic polls reached the Bombay High Court on Monday, where a Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) leader sought a stay on the declaration of results on 68 seats and a court-monitored inquiry into the ‘mass withdrawal’ forced due to pressure.
Uddhav Thackeray had requested regarding ‘Gen Z’
A day earlier, Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray had urged the State Election Commission to cancel the results of 68 wards of municipal bodies, saying the unopposed victory effectively deprives ‘Gen Z’ and first-time voters of their right to vote.
‘Gen Z’ are the youth who were born between 1997 and 2012. State Congress chief Harshvardhan Sapkal has also targeted the ruling alliance, saying that the BJP-led ‘Mahayuti”s lust for power has reached the extent of ‘swallowing democracy’.
