Moving from milk to solid food is a very important stage in the growth of children. But this is also often the most stressful time for parents. As soon as the child coughs, makes strange sounds or makes grimaces while eating, the parents wonder whether the child is choking. Regarding this, experts say that coughing or vomiting every time is not choking.
Sometimes it is just dating which is a normal and protective reaction of the body. In this regard, experts say that it is very important to understand the difference between gagging and choking. With proper identification, parents can avoid unnecessary panic and can take immediate steps if needed.
What is gagging?
Gagging is the body’s natural defense mechanism. When the child is learning to take solid food, this reflex helps in pushing the food out before it goes down the throat. During gagging, children may experience symptoms like coughing loudly, retching with sound, watery eyes, red face and tongue sticking out. According to the doctor, even though these symptoms may seem scary, in most cases the child manages it on his own. At such a time, parents should not panic and put fingers in their children’s mouth, because this can cause more food to enter inside.
What is choking?
Choking is a serious condition. This happens when something blocks the child’s windpipe and he or she is unable to breathe properly. The symptoms of choking are usually different from those of gagging. Symptoms of choking include the child not crying or doing anything, having difficulty breathing, skin turning blue or pale, not making any sound and having a nervous face. In such a situation, if the child is not able to make sounds or is not able to breathe, then it can be a medical emergency.
What to do if a child chokes?
If a child under 1 year of age chokes, lay the child upside down on your hand. After this give support to the head and neck. Give light back blows five times between the shoulders. If the object does not come out, turn the child over and give five chest thrusts and repeat these steps if necessary and get checked by a doctor immediately. Doctors also advise that parents should take training in CPR and Choking First Aid for their children. To reduce the risk of choking in children while eating, always make children sit upright and feed them, keep an eye on them while eating, give things like whole grapes, nuts, hard candy or meat to the child in small and soft pieces. Keep the texture of food as per the age of the child and never feed food to the child while lying down. According to the doctor, when the child starts solid food, he is learning to chew, move the food in his mouth and swallow it safely. Gagging is common during this period. Regarding this, doctors say that parents can remain normal if they have correct information. At the same time, recognizing the symptoms of choking can also prove to be a life-saving step for any parent.
