Heart attack can be a very scary and dangerous experience for anyone. This fear increases when you are alone at home and there is no help nearby. In this situation the person often becomes nervous, scared and unable to think what to do next. But in such a time, if you know some important steps and take appropriate steps immediately, your life can be saved.
Dr. Jeremy London, a board-certified cardiothoracic surgeon with 25 years of experience, recently explained clearly in a video what to do if you have a heart attack while alone at home. He said that it is difficult to keep a calm mind at such times, but by remembering some simple but important steps, you can control your situation and avoid a serious situation. If you follow Dr. London’s advice, it can prove helpful during a heart attack.
What to do if you are alone at home with a serious heart condition?
1. Call emergency services immediately – The first and most important thing to do in case of a heart attack is to immediately call emergency services (EMS/108/112). Dr. London says whether you’re experiencing some mild discomfort or more serious symptoms, calling for help as soon as possible can be life-saving.
2. Chew aspirin – If you have previously been advised by a heart disease specialist to take aspirin and are not allergic to it, chew an aspirin instead of swallowing it during an attack. By doing this, the pressure on the heart can be reduced and the severity of heart attack can be reduced to some extent. Note, this cannot completely prevent heart attacks, but it helps.
3. Make your home easy for emergency services – Dr. London says that keep the house ready in such a condition that emergency services can easily reach it. This means turning on the lights at night, keeping the door open, and if possible, unlocking the door beforehand. This way, when help is about to arrive, the team will have no trouble reaching your home.
4. Sit or lie down – There is a risk of sudden fainting in case of a heart attack. Therefore, Dr. London advises that you immediately sit or lie down. By doing this the risk of falling and injury to the head or body is reduced. This step acts as a safety net for you until help arrives.
5. Call someone you trust – If you are alone at home, call a friend, family member or close person immediately. Tell them you are having a heart attack and you are waiting for help. With this you will not be alone mentally and you will immediately have someone who understands the situation and takes necessary steps to help.
