A three-match ODI series is being played between India and Australia. Kangaroos had defeated Team India in the first ODI of this series. Virat Kohli could not even open his account in the comeback match. Virat was dismissed by Mitchell Starc on an off side ball. Now Australia’s number three batsman Matt Short has told what will be the Kangaroos’ plan in the second ODI against King Kohli.
Australian batsman Matt (Matthew) Short believes his team’s fast bowlers will continue to take advantage of Virat Kohli’s recent weakness against balls outside the off-stump in the second ODI. Kohli, who was out for a duck in the first match of the series in Perth, will be desperate to make a comeback at the Adelaide Oval, which is his most successful ground on foreign soil. He has scored five international centuries on this ground and has scored runs at an average of 65 in all formats.
Before the second ODI, Matt Short told reporters, “I was not in the fast bowlers’ meeting, but it seems he (Kohli) has been getting out like that recently. Some players like Hough (Josh Hazlewood) and Starcy (Mitchell Starc) have bowled against him a lot and they know what they are doing. In Perth they let the conditions take their course. There was a bit of swing and a bit of bounce on the wicket, So I’m sure they’ll do it again.”
India received huge support in the first ODI with a crowd of 42,423 at the Optus Stadium, most of whom were there to see the return of Rohit Sharma and Kohli to the side after more than seven months. After retiring from other formats of the game, both these former captains have returned to the national team for the first time after winning the Champions Trophy on March 9. Both of them had announced their retirement from the Test format before the England tour and decided to play only ODI matches. After India’s World Cup victory last year, both of them also retired from the T20 International format.
Short further said, “When Rohit or (Shubman) Gill got out that day (in Perth) and then Kohli came, there were just slogans. When he was coming on the field, as a batsman you felt very bad while going off the field. It is a great experience.”
The right-handed batsman has faced injuries and ups and downs since making his debut against India in Mohali. Starting at number eight, he batted at number three in the current series, but is still searching for form.
Short said, “It has been disappointing. I still feel I am moving well. I am feeling good at the crease. I have not been able to score runs yet but hopefully I will soon. It has been a disappointing year in terms of playing consistent cricket. It is always difficult to make a place in the playing eleven and I will accept whatever opportunity I get, whether it is opening the innings or batting at number three or anywhere else. That’s it. It’s important to remain flexible and try to bat wherever you get the space and be able to accept it.”
