The associate teams have made a lot of noise so far in the 2026 T20 World Cup. Now UAE has scored 173 runs against New Zealand. Glenn Phillips and Matt Henry were especially badly beaten. Captain Muhammad Wasim and Alishan Sharafu played half-centuries to take UAE to such a score from where it can dream of causing a big upset by defeating New Zealand.
In this match being played at Chepauk Stadium, Chennai, UAE won the toss and chose to bat first. Opener Aryansh was out cheaply after scoring 8 runs, but captain Muhammad Wasim along with Alishan Sharafu made a partnership of 107 runs and made the Kiwi bowlers yearn for wickets. He made this century partnership in 77 balls. This is the first time in the T20 World Cup that an associate team has made a century partnership against a full member country.
Captain Muhammad Wasim scored 66 runs in 45 balls, on the other hand, Sharafu contributed 55 runs in 47 balls. Apart from him, no batsman of the UAE team could play a big innings, but Mayank Kumar helped UAE reach a big score by playing a quick inning of 21 runs in 13 balls.
New Zealand used 7 bowlers in bowling, out of which Glenn Phillips proved to be particularly expensive. He did take one wicket, but gave away 30 runs in 2 overs. Phillips lost 27 runs in the 17th over of the innings. Whereas Matt Henry took 2 wickets, but gave away runs at an economical rate of more than 9. UAE’s score in 17 overs was 129/3. The team scored 44 runs in the last 3 overs.
