This time Union Budget 2026 is being considered as an opportunity to strengthen India’s economy from within rather than through flashy announcements. Amidst the focus on debt and GDP balance, the big question is – growth or fiscal discipline? In reality, the path to both goes through jobs. Tax relief and GST changes gave short term support to consumption, but permanent solution will come only from stable and rising income, and income increases from employment. India’s demographic advantage will work only if strong jobs are created in non-farm sectors outside agriculture. Construction and services have provided jobs, but manufacturing and MSMEs are important for long-term and better paying jobs. Digital, AI and new skills can make India a global services hub. If women participation, youth skilling and MSME-led growth remain the priorities of Budget 2026, then growth can become sustainable and inclusive.
